  • Workshop explores the origins and evolution of cinema through the decades

Doha, Qatar; 30 October 2019: Fusing film analysis and academic training, the Doha Film Institute (DFI) will present a two-part workshop on the ‘History of Cinema’ in collaboration with renowned French national film school La Fémis this December. Participants will journey through the epochs of modern cinema to study contemporary aesthetic and narrative in film.

From 1-6 December, the first part of the workshop will introduce participants to the multi-faceted evolution of cinema, looking at major cultural influences of the 20th century including the European avant-garde movements.

From 8-13 December, the second part of the workshop will explore the historical development of filmmaking and notions on the classical age of Hollywood, including an in-depth analysis of newly emerging genres in the post-war era and lasting impacts of the French New Wave movement on American filmmaking.

DFI will present the workshop in partnership with La Fémis, the Institut Francais Qatar, the French Embassy in Doha, FNAC and Fifty One East, which will be taught by Martin Barnier, professor of film history at Lumière University Lyon 2 and specialist in the history of sound, biopics, spectatorship and 3-D film.

Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, Chief Executive Officer of DFI, said: “To understand contemporary global cinema and its artful assembly of different forms, narratives and structures, we must also understand the evolution of cinematography throughout the decades. Our latest workshop is designed to explore unique layers of the history of cinema, establishing a deeper comprehension of film analysis from socio-political contexts.”

“We welcome film apprentices, movie enthusiasts and professionals looking to enrich their knowledge of cinema to join this riveting exploration of filmmaking as we dissect select masterpieces to identify some of the most crucial cultural influences on the arts,” she added.

Prospective participants must submit their application to training@dohafilminstitute.com by 17 November. Detailed information on the application process is available on the DFI website.
