Doha, Qatar; November 23, 2012: Film lovers in Doha voted for the Chinese feature film ‘Full Circle’, the story of a group of irrepressible senior citizens who decide to enter a reality show on television, and ‘Searching for Sugar Man’, a documentary on the life of Rodriguez, the 70s US rock icon who never was, as the ‘Best of the Fest’ at the fourth Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF), the annual cultural event of Doha Film Institute (DFI).
Audiences at DTFF had the opportunity to vote for their favourite feature and documentary at DTFF screenings. Both films received US$50,000 each as prize money. DTFF is presenting another opportunity for film lovers to watch the audience favourites with screenings on Friday (Nov. 23) and Saturday. ‘Full Circle’ will be screened on Friday at 9.30 PM at Souq Waqif Al Rayyan Theatre, while ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ will be screened on Saturday, 8.30 PM at Katara 12.
In ‘Full Circle’, directed by Yang Zhang, a group of irrepressible senior citizens decide to put together a performance to enter a reality television contest. Despite illness, senility, a lack of acting ability and a non-nonsense chief nurse, they charge towards the competition with the stubborn fervour of youthful dreamers.
‘Searching for Sugar Man’, directed by Malik Bendjelloul, is a resonating story about hope, inspiration and the power of music, as it tracks the life of Rodriguez, whose first album went nowhere and he disappeared into obscurity. Bootlegged copies of his recordings made their way into South Africa and he became a phenomenon.
DTFF will also host its regular screenings as well as a host of Family Day activities on Saturday, the closing day.
