Doha, Qatar: January 30, 2013: Doha Film Institute (DFI), Qatar’s independent cultural organisation that brings the country’s film initiatives under one banner, is hosting a week-long hands-on intensive cinematography workshop titled ‘AKKAS CINEMA: DFI Cinematography Workshop’ from the 27th January until 2nd February, 2013.

The workshop, led by DFI’s resident Director of Photography, Thomas Hines, will form part of the Gulf Film Development programme to help build the skills of novice filmmakers to film professionals, covering all aspects of camerawork and lighting, contributing to strengthening the skill-sets of Qatari film technicians, and in turn, the quality of their future films.

Part of DFI’s all-round education and training strategy, the cinematography workshop is set to become a regular feature through 2013. Having received almost 200 applications for the current workshop, 20 candidates were selected to partake. DFI plans to offer similar workshops in the coming months focused around diverse aspects of cinematography, so there is still a chance if you missed out on the first round.

Starting with the basics, the ‘AKKAS CINEMA: DFI Cinematography Workshop’ covers the roles of the camera crew, health and safety on-site, set-up and dismantling of equipment, and the use of lighting with an emphasis on picture composition. Participants will also be provided with insightful analysis and breakdown of filming and technical camera issues including lighting, extra FX, blocking, the logistics of shooting.
