The Last Days with Eliane
Spring Grants 2022 - Production Stage
Synopsis
‘The Last Days with Eliane’ is a look at my maternal grandmother—mother of six children, French, Christian from Tunis—who died of Alzheimer’s disease more than a year ago. Having found herself unable to care for her alone, and having refused to place her in an institution, my aunt, Fouzie, accepted my family’s proposal to move in with my grandmother, Eliane, in 2014. During her last days, Eliane was no longer communicating, as the disease was at a very advanced stage. One day, Fouzie gave me a box full of notebooks with pages completely blackened by long writings. These notebooks belonged to Eliane. Through her notebooks, I discover today another image of my grandmother, full of sorrow, but also of love. I wonder about her true identity, in the hope of understanding mine. With all these people around me, all these generations, the film cannot help but celebrate life.

About the Director
Mehdi Hajri was born in Tunis and moved to the south of France at the age of 8. In 2013, he obtained his baccalaureate in Economic and Social Sciences at the Paul Cézanne high school where he had the opportunity to deepen his knowledge in cinema. Six months later, he was forced to return to Tunisia with his family, his paternal grandmother having serious health problems. Mehdi decided to stay in Tunisia for a year. He then concentrated on writing his first short film script. In 2015, he joined the School of Arts and Cinema of El Omrane where he trained for a B.T.S. in film direction. The following year, Mehdi co-wrote, directed and edited a short fiction film entitled 'Women'. In 2017, he wrote and directed 'The Sun Will Rise', a medium-length fiction film, produced with the help of Imed Marzouk (Propaganda Productions) and Melik Kochbati (Atlas Vision Productions).
