Synopsis

Set in 1970's Glasgow, the film tells the story of John McGill, a shy and intelligent 16-year-old boy who, through a series of circumstances, turns into a NED - a non-educated delinquent and goes off the rails. He becomes increasingly violent and aggressive, all the while searching for a way out of his wretched home life. Peter Mullan examines to what extent we can retain or not human violence when we're just looking for some love. Winner of the best film and best actor prizes at the San Sebastian Film Festival, Mullan's latest feature marks his first film since 2002's acclaimed "The Magdalene Sisters," and in its depiction of a young man gone wayward it seems a perfect complement to the earlier film that was centered around troubled women. Mullan - a longtime actor who appeared in Danny Boyle's "Shallow Grave" as well as the last two Harry Potter films - also figures prominently on screen in his own feature, playing McGill's menacing father.
